La Marina del Prat
This design was submitted to the 2015 edition of the Europan architecture competition and comprised a flexible programme with a predominance of subsidised housing for students.
Located next to the Zona Franca industrial estate and Barcelona’s port, this unstructured neighbourhood is awaiting the development of the entire area located at the foot of Montjuic hill.
The influence of the nearby port can be seen in the submitted design, in which a series of different types of ‘containers’ are placed, Tetris-style, on top of each other around two atria that act as heat and electricity conductors and as elements in the primary circulation route.
A porous metallic skin in red (vermell means ‘red’ in Catalan) covers the fragmented design, unifying the whole. The containers’ cubed shapes emerge on to the building’s land- and sea-facing facades, as they are stacked on top of each other, creating an uneven profile at the top.
